The BHS men’s cross country team won its third state championship in four years on Saturday, Nov. 2 in Kernersville, with three runners placing in the top 10. The women’s team finished seventh in the state out of 41 schools, trailing sixth-place Wilkes Central by a single point.
Senior Avan Hinkle, who won both the conference championship meet Oct. 16 and the west regional competition on Oct. 26, placed third in the state out of 139 runners with a time of 16:21.
He was followed by sophomore Keaton Campbell in fourth place, senior Leo Murray in sixth place, senior Ezra Stubbs in 12th place and senior Max Bailey in 16th place to round out the top five scorers, who determine the team’s placing.
The teams are coached by Ben Morgan and Jackie Witherspoon.

Other Blue Devils with strong runs were sophomore Andrew Gorman in 30th place and sophomore James Brooks in 48th place. Results can be found on NC Milesplit.
The men’s team also won the regional and conference championships on its way to the state competition.
The women’s team was led by freshman Veronica Jacques in 24th place. The top five runners also included sophomore Maddie Galloway in 33rd place, freshman Kylie Campbell in 35th place, senior Abby Huter in 48th place and sophomore Lila Laughridge in 50th place.
Senior Ava Gorman and junior Paige Dinsdale also competed for Brevard among the state’s top 137 runners.
The women’s team also won its conference championship, and placed fourth out of 16 teams at the west regional meet.
