Update: the soccer team was defeated 2-1 by Patton in the second round of the playoffs on Nov. 12, after beating Providence Grove 5-0 in round 1 on Nov. 9.

The Brevard High varsity men’s soccer team won the conference championship Monday, Nov. 4, defeating Patton High 2-1. The win may be historic, as Principal Mick Galloway said it’s possibly the first conference championship for the team in school history.

The team will play its first game of the playoffs Saturday, Nov. 9 at home. The start time has not yet been determined. The team enters the playoffs with an overall record of 17-3-2, and is 11-0-1 in conference.

As the team progresses through the season, players are reflecting on their growth, both individually and as a team.

Shaymos Geor, a key player on the team, shared insights about their journey and the evolving dynamics that are shaping their success. One of the standout elements of this season has been the building chemistry among team members.

“I feel that the team chemistry is building,” Shaymos noted, emphasizing the importance of trust and collaboration on the field.

This sense of unity has been crucial, especially following a notable tie against Owen High, which showcased their resilience and teamwork.

A new coach this year not only infused fresh strategies into their play but has also fostered a more supportive environment.

“The team has had a lot of growth since the arrival of the new coach,” Shaymos remarked.

Their toughest match was against Enka High, currently ranked fifth in the state for 3A soccer (Brevard plays in the 2A division for smaller schools). Despite the intensity of the competition, the experience has served as a learning opportunity, pushing the players to elevate their game.

Currently, Brevard High players are thriving in their conference, holding first place – a significant improvement from last year’s third-place finish. This success can be linked to their hard work and the strong bonds formed throughout the season.

Shaymos expressed satisfaction with his own growth, mainly in his skills and movement off the ball.

“I think I have improved with my personal skills,” he said, adding that the individual commitment contributes to the team’s overall performance.

As they look to the future, the team is focused on maintaining their momentum while preparing for upcoming challenges. With an eye on the defensive line, which will see a complete turnover due to many players graduating, the team understands the importance of reinforcing their defense to sustain their success.

Overall, the Brevard High boys soccer team is making strides this season, driven by enhanced team chemistry, strong coaching and individual growth. As they navigate the remainder of the season, they are poised to build on their achievements and face whatever challenges come their way.
