The Brevard Lady Devils opened their season with an 8-0 win against East Henderson, and it’s got to be a sign of future success. Last year these ladies went deep into state playoffs, making it all the way to the fourth round before losing to Pine Lake Prep 5-0.

The team’s overall record from last season was 20-3-2 and they finished third in their conference behind Polk County High and the conference champions, Hendersonville High.

However, with all this success comes age. The team had nine seniors from last year and will only have three this year. This leaves a lot of weight on the shoulders of these seniors.

Goalie Abby Huter said the three seniors have been on the team since freshman year. “It feels like the full circle to now be the seniors,” she said.

She talks about her responsibility to lead and how important it is to “keep the traditions going,” adding that “we are taking our last year into our own hands to make it the best it can be.”

There’s no doubt the expectation the players have for this team is high. “The majority of us have grown up playing together in school and club, so we definitely have an advantage of already knowing each other’s playing styles and having the chemistry you need on a team,” Huter said.

This also leaves a lot of opportunity for underclassmen to step it up in order to maintain a winning season. There are a total of 10 underclassmen playing up on varsity. One of whom, No. 18 Charlie Goodwin, a sophomore, has scored seven goals so far this season in only three games compared to the last season, when she had 30.

“I love my teammates and I am so excited for this season,” said Kennedy Reeves, a sophomore who played varsity her freshman year. She then talked about how the new coach, Chappie Powell, is very good. He coached some of these girls at the middle school.

Kennedy thinks this team will win the conference and can make it all the way to state, saying, “we can do this by playing for each other and not just for ourselves.”

There is no way to know exactly how far these girls will go. As one player said, “every year I have been on the Brevard soccer team has been special, but this year is the one I think I’ll remember the most.”
