The Lady Devils soccer team competed Monday, May 19 in the third round of playoffs against conference rival Hendersonville High.
When they first played Hendersonville on April 8 at home, they won 2-1. Shortly after, when they played away at Hendersonville on May 1, they lost 1-0. On Monday, the Lady Devils were again able pull out the win.
At the end of regulation the score was 2-2, which led the game to go into two 10-minute overtime periods and then into two 5-minute sudden death overtime periods.
After all of that, the teams were still tied, sending the match into an intense round of penalty kicks. It wasn’t looking good for Brevard when it came down to their last two shooters to allow them a chance to continue to the next round.
Hendersonville made all of their first three kicks, while Brevard made one of three. That’s when sophomores Charley Goodwin and Macy Rogers stepped up and made both of their final shots.
Senior Abby Huter, the goalie, then saved the last two shots attempted by Hendersonville, resulting in a three-out-of-five tie.

Finally, the game went to sudden-death penalties and BHS’ first shooter, sophomore Lila Laughridge, made hers. As the tension continued to build, Huter saved the next shot by Hendersonville, allowing the Lady Devils to head to the fourth round of playoffs.
They will play on Thursday, May 22 at Pine Lake Preparatory in Mooresville. The public is invited to come out and support the Lady Devils. BHS will take a bus for student fans to Pine Lake Prep to support the team. For more information, email Athletic Director Josh Galloway at joshg@gmail.com.
