After a long year, our spring sports teams finished the season strong with a great deal of impressive accomplishments.

We have six spring sports teams at Brevard High consisting of baseball, men’s golf, softball, women’s soccer, track and field and men’s tennis.

Baseball

The baseball team’s biggest accomplishment, according to Head Coach Will Lindsey, was “laying the groundwork for future success in the years to come. This group started a culture and a standard that will continue for years to come.”

When describing his favorite moment, he talked about how late in the season in an away game the team needed to win, he made a mound visit.

“I have never been around a group that was so confident and the way they were communicating was at an elite level with each other. It shows that the work and the culture that we started two years ago is coming to fruition,” Lindsey said.

His key players were seniors Jordyn Brown and Coleman Smith and junior Braylon Thompson.

“The best way to describe the performance this season is togetherness. We faced a lot of injuries this year and this group stayed the course despite that,” he said.

His goal for next season is to continue the work that the seniors left behind for the younger players.

Softball

The softball team ended the season with a 16-7 record and finished second in its conference.

“With two seniors who provided the team great leadership, this has been one of the best teams I have ever coached in 26 years at BHS,” Head Coach Chad Owenby said.

Emma Bailey and Claire Wilson were the seniors who led the team. He also mentioned other key leadership roles from Emma Anders, Ava Rogers and Leah Cabe.

When looking ahead to the future, Owenby said, “Next year we will have five to six seniors and we have quite a few girls coming from the middle school.”

He looks forward to working with these ladies throughout summer and fall so that they can compete in the new conference.

Women’s soccer

The women’s soccer team had several amazing accomplishments this year, starting with winning the conference title for the first time in at least 15 years, and a quarterfinal finish in the fourth round of state playoffs.

“I believe the biggest accomplishments are found in the cultural shift of what it means to play women’s soccer at BHS, and in Transylvania County,” said Head Coach Chappie Powell. “We are getting ever closer to winning a state championship.”

He said the greatest success of the team is “how they are positively inspiring younger players in the community to dream big and believe that those dreams are within reach.”

His favorite moment of the season was their third-round playoff win against archrival Hendersonville High at home.

“To do that in front of our well-attended and supportive home crowd was just simply the best,” he said. “I’ve played in and coached a lot of high-pressure soccer games in my life, but I’ve never witnessed anything like that game … and emerged as the victor.”

When asking him about his key players, Powell was reluctant to single out a player by saying that in a team sport, it takes everyone, no matter their role, to make it all work. He did say that senior captains Patience Pandolfo, Abby Huter and Annaly Baron “stepped up from the first workout as leaders with confidence, high work ethic, encouragement to others, inclusiveness, accountability, acceptance of a new coaching staff, and all the things we hoped that they could be for the team.”

Huter this season made over 70 saves as a goalkeeper.

His goal for next year is to improve every aspect of the foundation they have built.

“We will be striving to win our new conference, play the toughest non-conference schedule that we can find, and win a state championship,” Powell said.

Track & Field

The men’s track and field team had several great accomplishments this season, including being conference champions, regional champions, and the State Championship runner-up. The girls team was runner-up at the conference championship, getting beat by only 2.5 points.

Head Coach Ben Morgan said the team’s overall performance this season was “incredible; best result in school history.”

He said the key players for the boys team were seniors Leo Murray, Avan Hinkle, Ezra Stubbs, Eli Griffin, and sophomore Braylon Thompson. Murray received the 2025 2A NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award at the 2A state championships after placing second in the 800-meter run.

Seniors Sebastian Duncan, Silvan Guidry, Murray, Stubbs and Hinkle were recognized as All-State athletes, along with Thompson and sophomore Keaton Campbell.

As for next season, Morgan said, “The goal is to always win the state championship.”

Men’s tennis

The men’s tennis team’s biggest accomplishment was making the state team tournament and finishing third in conference.

The team also sent three players to the individual regional tournament, including sophomores Luke McLauchlin and Aiden Winkler as well as freshman Paxton Smith. Head Coach Scott Keeley said these were his key players on the team.

When asked about the highlight of the season, he said having all the regional players win a match.

“Overall, every one of my players improved significantly. We have a young and talented team. We should compete for the conference championship next year,” Keeley said.
