Many Brevard High students used their creative and hardworking sides in the weeks leading up to homecoming, more commonly known as “Hoco,” making proposals for their significant others and their friends.

The Hoco dance was held Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Lumberyard in Brevard. Many students continued the classic tradition of making Hoco proposals in preparation, in which a student makes a creative and original, usually romantic, gesture used to ask the receiver to accompany them to the dance.

These proposals can range from grand displays to something as simple as giving a single flower, but most recently they are commonly presented as a sign with a humorous kick to it.

These serve as a chance for students to express themselves, and often the proposals are cherished even after Hoco is over.

Kayson Toole, a sophomore, was one of the many who received a proposal. She was surprised with flowers and a Spiderman-themed poster by her boyfriend that read, “My spidey senses are telling me to ask you to Hoco!”

She was delighted by the surprise and very thrilled about the gift, saying, “I knew he was planning on something but didn’t know when it was coming. I was very excited… I put it on my wall! It’s special to me because he thought it out himself and I loved it.”

Aiden Cantrell, a senior, made his first homecoming proposal this year with a poster that read, “The summer you went to Hoco with me?” The question was a reference to the popular show “The Summer I Turned Pretty” and was accompanied by a bouquet of flowers and a bag of Jolly Ranchers picked specifically for his girlfriend according to her tastes.

“I didn’t really know what I was doing, My sister helped me a lot with it but I’d say it was worth it,” he said.

The poster was decorated with rhinestones, seashell stickers and glued-on fake flowers, and was hand-painted.

“I was happy she liked it,” he said.

Many loved seeing others’ posters as well as their own.

“It was nice to see all the posters people were getting, it made me happy for them,” Madison Combs said.
