UPDATE NOV. 13: The men’s varsity soccer team lost 1-0 in round four of the playoffs Thursday to Ashe County.

“I am upset because this was my last high school soccer game, but thinking over every game, practice, I am still grateful I had got to do it with this team,” said Team Captain Timothy Jordan.

“Soccer has gained me lots of different friends and opportunities that I will forever remember. I count my Coach Adam Spencer and all my teammates as my family for all they have done for me.”

To seniors Jack Friedman, Shaymos Geor, Timothy Jordan, Wayne Hellriggle, Roberto Resendiz, Christopher Flunker, Bryan Flores, Cristian Castillo and Abimelec Garrido – thank you for being the building blocks to what we hope to be a successful future for the Brevard soccer team.

UPDATE NOV. 11: The men’s varsity soccer team, a six seed, defeated Forbush High, a 3 seed, Monday on penalty kicks and will face Ashe County High Thursday, Nov. 12 in the fourth round of the playoffs. At Forbush, the teams were tied 1-1, and Brevard won after making four of five penalty kicks, while Forbush made three of five. Rion Coadwell, Jack Friedman, Alan Sanchez and Braydn Toms made the winning penalty kicks.

On Nov. 7, the Brevard High varsity soccer team defeated Pisgah High 3-2 at home, with goals made by Rion Coadwell and Shaymos Geor, in round two of the 4A/5A NCHSAA Men’s Soccer State Championships.

The team’s record is now 16-5.

“This game was one of the most stressful games this season. But after the first two goals I feel that we pulled together and started playing as a team, and finished the game out nicely,” team captain Timothy Jordan said. “I thank my coach, Adam Spencer, and I am proud of my teammates.”

The team travels to Forbush High in East Bend, Yadkin County Monday, Nov. 10 for round two. Forbush defeated West Stanly 9-0 in round one and has a record of 18-5-1.

Brevard’s season started with four losses in five games, but the team quickly turned things around. BHS won its next 14 games before losing the last regular-season match.

“I feel like, at the start of the season, that something clicked in our minds because we know we’re better then the teams (we were losing to), we just were starting rough, but we have been on a streak of winning until our last game,” said junior Jeremy Cortez Reynaldo. “Over time we’ve just improved our skill and mentality thanks to our coach, Adam, and our chemistry with one another has led us this far.”

Cortez Reynaldo said he and many of his teammates have played together for several years on school and club teams.

“I think this team has a really good bond and a really strong friendship between everyone,” Junior Cristian Castillo said.

When it comes to the championship, Castillo said everyone wants to win and have the state title. “Seeing the team happy and making it as far as possible and leaving a huge mark for Brevard” is what motivates him during the playoffs.

Cortez Reynaldo said his teammates have “a strong mentality,” and he sees that they want the title as much as he does.

“I’ve been preparing myself mentally by realizing its win or go home and I want my friends, my senior teammates I’ve been playing with since (we were) young, to be able to leave with a state championship, because who knows if we’ll be able play again on a team together,” he said.

“I get motivated by putting in my mind that we will be the best soccer team Brevard High School has ever had, the only team that has won a state championship.”

Junior Rion Coadwell said the team is very connected and unified, and the team’s “strong defense” will be the key to winning a state championship.

“I think everyone working together and continuing to communicate throughout the game will result in a win,” Castillo added.
