The “old gym” at BHS is once again open to student use after nearly a year of renovations. A ceremony was held Tuesday, Dec. 9 to cut the ribbon, and the event included remarks and refreshments.
MJROTC cadets and players from the men’s and women’s basketball teams, who all use the gym, were on hand for the ribbon cutting.
The gym renovation was the first construction project to be completed school bond funds.
The gym was closed Jan. 20 after a structural assessment revealed that the large laminate wood beams supporting the roof had begun to rot away.
“We plan to renew the aging roof, as well as replace windows, flooring and install a new HVAC system,” Athletic Director Josh Galloway told The Broadcaster in May. “Safety of our students is our top priority.”
The gym has been used for the MJROTC program and physical education classes. The closure forced the classes to relocate to other areas of the campus, adding strain to already limited space. The wrestling and basketball teams were also impacted by the closure.
