Interim Principal Doug Justice started at Brevard High on March 2. The veteran educator, administrator and coach, who retired from Henderson County Public Schools, says his goal is to support students and staff through the end of the school year.
Broadcaster: Do you have any previous experiences with teaching?
Justice: I’ve been a teacher and a coach, an athletic director and administrator for a combined 31 years.
Broadcaster: What previous school did you teach at?
Justice: I was at East Henderson, I was at North Henderson, and I was at St. Stephen’s High School in Detroit.
Broadcaster: Do you have any goals for the rest of the school year?
Justice: I want to make this the best end of the school year, and see that everybody is safe and have the best rest of the school year that we can possibly have without Mr. Galloway.
Broadcaster: Would you stay at Brevard if you had the opportunity?
Justice: Well, I’ve been retired for the last four years, so I’m probably going to go back to retirement.
Broadcaster: What are you looking for in your new role here?
Justice: Just to make it as painless for all the students and teachers to get to the end of the year so they can hire a new principal.
Broadcaster: What’s one thing you’ve seen at other schools that you want to try to do?
Justice: I’m not really going to change a whole lot until the end of the year until I get a new placement.
Broadcaster: If you were a student at BHS, what extracurricular activities would you join?
Justice: I would play sports and I would be in the FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes). I’ve been involved with that a lot. I would try to get into a lot of things that I’m not comfortable with. This place offers a lot too.
Broadcaster: What was your favorite subject at school?
Justice: I like social studies. I like math a little bit, but I love PE. That’s what I did.
Broadcaster: What are you most nervous or excited about regarding our specific school community?
Justice: The thing that makes me nervous is I don’t know my way around here. I don’t know where all the teachers’ rooms are and stuff like that, but I’m working on that.
