BHS has a new JROTC instructor named Col. Charles Megown.
Megown attended the Naval Academy for four years and then served for 22 years as an active-duty Marine. He became a pilot because the movie “Top Gun” inspired him, and his job involved flying helicopters.
Megown is from Pennsylvania and grew up in Jacksonville, N.C. His father was in the military and Megown knew how important it was to serve. He also grew up in a military town and was around Marines all the time, so he knew being a Marine was something he was interested in. He believes Marines are “full men at heart.”
Megown thought teaching would be a good career, and said he’s always had a lot of patience. His son was in JROTC in eastern North Carolina and thought it was a cool job, and so Megown looked to see what was available for Marines.
Megown would love to get more cadets into the BHS JROTC program, saying it’s an amazing and great leadership opportunity for students.
“No one on fire, no one shooting – nothing that’s a big deal we can’t solve,” Megown said.
