Prize money of $4,500 is up for grabs through the new BHS writing club, founded by junior Delaney Martens. Located in the library during third period I&E, the club, which has about 20 members, provides a space and time for students to write.
As president and founder, Martens said that even she struggles to find time to write. “It turned into work more than anything.”
Over the summer, she took it upon herself to create a contest and raise the $4,500 for cash prizes.
“The contest is called ‘Write Your Way Up,’ and it was my summer passion project,” Martens said. “I want to increase writing opportunities for students, and give them the chances I never had in order to legitimize their skills.”
Entering the writing competition, which kicks off next semester, is extremely easy and completely free, she added. “It’s open to pretty much anyone with access to a computer.”
This club is the perfect way to keep a writer’s creativity and inspiration up, and provides a not-so-common writing opportunity.
“Writing club is a place that’s supposed to provide people a quiet place to write, and to motivate them to do so,” Delaney said.
“With writing, it’s important that you set aside a time to do it, otherwise you never will.”
