Not only is the women’s tennis team dominating the court with a 9-3 record so far, they are also creating new friendships.
The team has a dynamic and electric connection, with many new underclassmen joining this year.
“Most of them seem to genuinely enjoy not just working together on the court, but spending time together outside of tennis as well, which is a unique quality to find,” said Coach Annie Kolk.
At the beginning of the season, the team traveled to Ohio to watch some of their favorite professional tennis players play at the Cincinnati Open.
“The whole trip was an incredible bonding experience for the team, and we’re hoping to turn it into an annual tradition,” Kolk said.
One of the underclassmen to join the team this year is Sarah Grey Monk, whose sister, Ella Monk, is a senior and has played for the Devils since freshman year.
“I have been playing tennis for a long time and I enjoy it,” Sarah Grey Monk said. “I like hitting the tennis ball, being active and playing my best. I also knew I would enjoy being around my teammates.”

Those teammates also include Sophie Owen, Lila Hipp, Hannah Wallace. Charlotte Barlow, Aspen Latter, Dakota Sizemore, Lauren Ramsey, Myla Tucker, Gwen Andrews, Haley McCall and Annie Hak.
Despite being a primarily young team, they are building their confidence practice by practice. Students can show their support for the Lady Devils by purchasing tickets to the Racquet Rumble on Oct. 10.
The team’s next game is Monday, Sept. 28 at Tuscola High, followed by a match Wednesday, Sept. 30 at home against Pisgah High. The 4A West Pre-Regional will be held Monday, Oct. 5 at home.
When asked about their 9-3 record, sophomore Wallace confidently affirmed, “We are not done with the season yet!”
