With a new principal at our school, students have had to get used to some new rules. One of the biggest changes is the new dress code. Students are now not allowed to wear hats, off-the-shoulder tops, spaghetti straps or low-cut tops.
Dress codes are important because schools need rules that keep students focused and make sure everyone is dressed appropriately. However, I think some of these new rules are too strict.
Students should be able to express themselves through what they wear while still dressing appropriately for school.
For example, spaghetti straps and off-the-shoulder tops are now not allowed. Some students may have clothes that were allowed before but are no longer allowed because of the new rules. This can be frustrating, especially when students feel like they are not doing anything wrong.
The school does have a reason for having these rules. The principal may believe that certain clothing can be distracting or not appropriate for school. Having a dress code can also make expectations clear for students.
Even though I understand why the school has a dress code, I think there should be a balance. Students should follow reasonable rules, but they should also have some freedom in what they wear.
The rules should not make students feel like they are constantly worried about getting dress-coded.
